What is MAME

MAME is a multi-purpose emulation framework.

MAME's purpose is to preserve decades of software history. As electronic technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents this important "vintage" software from being lost and forgotten. This is achieved by documenting the hardware and how it functions. The source code to MAME serves as this documentation. The fact that the software is usable serves primarily to validate the accuracy of the documentation (how else can you prove that you have recreated the hardware faithfully?). Over time, MAME (originally stood for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) absorbed the sister-project MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), so MAME now documents a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles and calculators, in addition to the arcade video games that were its initial focus.

The MAME project as a whole is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, 2 (GPL-2.0), since it contains code made available under multiple GPL-compatible licenses. A great majority of files (over 90% including core files) are under the BSD-3-Clause License and we would encourage new contributors to distribute files under this license.

MAME 0.123

05 Feb 2008

Most of the glitches in 0.122u8 should be taken care of, so it's time to salute MAME's 11th birthday with a nice new release.

(Apologies in advance for the cut-off text in the whatsnew; it should read "Fixed incorrect default screen size in midyunit games." It wasn't a big enough error to prompt a recall!)

Quick 0.122u8 fix

04 Feb 2008

Seems that 0.122u8 went out with a little typo I introduced. Here's a quick fix for it. Please stop the carnage at MAMETesters and report any further issues found once this patch is applied....

MAME 0.122u8

02 Feb 2008

The last update before 0.123 is now available. A few new bug fixes and a lot of nice cleanups of older drivers in this round.

MAME 0.122u7

24 Jan 2008

Time for another MAME update. Another dozen bugs squashed and bunch more fixes/improvements, spelled out in excruciating detail in the whatsnew.txt.

And no, I don't think we'll go up to 11, but there's at least one more update expected before 0.123 is ready.

MAME 0.122u6

17 Jan 2008

This just in ... a new update to MAME 0.122. This one brings with it 26 more MAMETesters bugfixes and a lot of nice driver cleanups. We'll probably stay on 0.122 until the end of bugfix month, and wrap it up with a 0.123 sometime around the 11th anniversary....

MAME 0.122u5

11 Jan 2008

16 more bugs squashed, and a new update to play with. Have fun!

MAME 0.122u4

07 Jan 2008

A little early, but there has been a ton of activity in the last few days, so now is the right time for an update. What's new? Over 40 MAMETesters bugfixes, for a start! Read about the rest of it in the whatsnew.

Edit: due to an unexplained glitch, I had to break this patch into two pieces. Apply them both. If you already tried to apply the original single patch and failed, then simply applying the second part should give you a working result. Sorry for the inconvenience!
